I was referring to this earlier when I said Genuine Check will not approve of this situation. Unless if you have the product key and are the owner of the computer, you should not install any Microsoft Product. This is to prevent software piracy. Although it is possible to get by with this situation because you own the product, Microsoft will still not allow you to input this operating system on the computer. I suggest that you get a product key by either finding yours or buying one from Microsoft. You will have to contact Microsoft and explain the situation that you lost your key and hopefully they will approve your request and make the sale.
My best recommendation is, is that while Windows XP Professional is on this computer, please prepare the computer for upgrade to Ubuntu Linux or buy a new version of Windows such as Windows Vista Home Basic/Premium.
I serviced two computers who would not start up in the past three months. It took me two hours each computer to service them after I took my Ubuntu Install disk, plugged it in to the drive, began setup. Mind you, this finished within 45 minutes and the computer ran well. Does this happen every time? Not exactly. I had to make sure the RAM was more than/at 384 MB so that way they would run optimized!

It was actaully a permissions problem, I went into safe mode a simply allowed permissions for everyone for the whole of my hard disk, and it seemed to help.

If you don't have a valid key, then the worst thing that can happen is that they tell you what you already know.
No drama involved at all.

One last thing, I noticed at work, we have XP Pro SP2. Is it advisable to upgrade to SP3? I know there were some reboot issues on HPs with XP SP3 or am I mistaken?
Thanks.

No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try.

Now that I think about it, all of the computers at work are HP/Compaq, so I guess they didn't want to bother with either. Thanks for the link.
