I've been working on a friend's computer, that all of sudden stopped working. I was able to run some AV and malware programs to get it going again. However, it has now been discovered that it is now a hardware issue also, everything has been outlined in the following post, http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic201963.html.

I was advised to start a new post here because all of the services are not starting, which is preventing me from completely fixing the computer. Here are the specs:
Compaq
R4000
XP Home
SP2

The copy/paste feature is still disabled and I can't connect tothe internet because the service won't start. I was advised to do a repair, but I'm not sure how to do that. I do have XP SP1,2,3 along with a Recovery Console CD.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Please click Start then click run. Please enter REGEDIT in to the field and hit OK. Minimize Registry Editor and do not make any changes to the registry.
While the registry is open,
Please Reboot the computer, and press repeated F8 till the Safe Boot screen shows. Please use the arrow keys and highlight Last Known Good Configuration and press enter please.

This will reverse the changes made to the System Services.

Please tell me your results!

The first step is to try this if you haven't tried it already:

You can use Windows File Protection to repair the system files if they are corrupted.

Go to Start > Run and type or copy and paste in the Run box: sfc /scannow
(note the space between sfc and /)

It launches Windows File Protection. It may takes a while (minimum 20 minutes if your computer is fast) to check the integrity of Windows system files and if needed replaces them.
You may need your Windows installation CD.

Also make sure of this setting:

Please perform the following:
  • Go to Start > Run, type services.msc and hit Enter.
  • In the right panel under Name tab find Cryptographic Services.
  • Double-click on the service and set the Startup type to Automatic.
  • Under Service status click Start.

It did a scan to make sure the files were intact, but nothing after that.

The services are still not starting, even when I try to do it manually.

Here is the message I get when I try to start any service:

Could not start the "Service Name" service on the Local Computer. Error 1068: The dependency service or group failed to start.

You couldn't update to Service Pack 3 and got that error about Cryptographic Services. To get the update going you need Cryptographic Services. It depends in turn on Remote Procedure Call. I suspect the latter is not starting that is why Cryptographic Services is not starting. There is a long list of fixes to do : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822798

An easier option for you is to do a repair install then update the Windows. After doing the repair install disable auto-protect or real-time protection of your antivirus and install SP3 right away.

How to repair install ? See this: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

ok, well I'm not getting the Repair option, so it looks like I will have to try the other fix at http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm. I'm guessing that the repair option isn't showing, because the system is Home Edition and my disk is Pro. Is this correct? I made a complete image of the HD last night, so I'm going to check with my friend to see if she has and XP Home CD, but I'm assuming this was preinstalled on the laptop. Please let me know if you can think of anything else, because I won't get a chance to try the other fixes until tonight.

Thanks again.

BTW, none of the MS fixes had worked so far (I'm down to Method 7).

FWIW: You cannot use a XP Pro disk to do either a repair install or run sfc /scannow on an XP Home system. The system files are different.

Thanks. I figured that, and I don't know anyone who has XP Home. There were still a few fixes left for me to try, so hopefully one of these will work.

You have to check to see if this service is stating, other wise all the fixes are useless:

Please perform the following:
  • Go to Start > Run, type services.msc and hit Enter.
  • In the right panel under Name tab find Remote Procedure Call.
  • Double-click on the service and set the Startup type to Automatic.
  • Under Service status click Start.

If this service doesn't start you have to think of something else. Have you tried to restore the system back to a time prior to the problem.
