CHKDSK works on the file system that's resident on your hard drive. It does not check the physical health of the drive. You can get free tools from the manufacturer of your hard drive to check it. There are links to the most common one's in this topic: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic28744.html

Maxtor was bought out by Seagate - so use the Seagate tools here: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/seatools/

Not a problem, that's why we're here!

Download SeaTools for Windows (this presumes that you still can get into Windows). Here's the link: http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?loca...000f5ee0a0aRCRD

Backup your stuff if you're still able, then get out your recovery/restore disks and prepare for an educating experience.

Replacing the hard drive and reinstalling Windows will teach you a lot about how the system operates - and how to fix things that you may encounter.

Let us know when you're ready to proceed and we can start by helping you to pick a hard drive, install it, and then reinstall Windows.
