networiking with a lan cable

can i network my laptop and my destktop with a lan cable. a few reasons why i want to is becuase i want to play my bro at a game,(yes we each have a copy).

I don't think that you can just plug a LAN cable on a desktop's Ethernet port, then plug the other end to the laptop's Ethernet port directly. You need a router.

Here's an illustration on how you should wire the network:

O----o----O

O =Computer
o = Router
--- =LAN cable
