On a Windows XP Home SP2 PC, I removed AVG 7.5 and installed AVAST 4.8 FREE.
Ran full scan on PC and Avast announced Trojan in DLL whose name began with COUPON; DLL was in C:\WINDOWS;
Allowed AVAST to delete this DLL.
Since then, web browsers don't connect (IE 7 & FireFox 3.0.5);
Ping works all over the place and Outlook Express can send and receive.
Ran SFC and got no hits. SuperAntiSpyware got no hits.
Need some suggestions here please.

When I got the PC to a better equipped facility and it no-longer had to rely on a "spit-and-bailing-wire ISP", HTTP started working again.
Absolutely no changes of any sort were required for this.
Thanks for the come-back.
I've never seen an ISP quit delivering HTTP before.

I'm glad to hear your computer is working again - I just put Avast 4.8 on a computer too. Despite the good news of being back on line and Avast finding issues I'd still encourage you to do some more checking of the health of your computer - make sure you are malware free. Do you run the free Malwarebytes Antimalware? (MBAM) it's a nice tool to use regularly.
