64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium. This only happens in Safe Mode, not in Normal Mode.

I was following a guide a few days ago and was in Safe Mode with Networking. It called to download a file while in safe mode and I attempted to do so, only to find that it wasn't where I saved it... it wasn't anywhere. I opened up a folder with the location I was attempting to save it to, and attempted the download again - I saw the file as it was downloading, but the second it finished it disappeared. The file itself was Spybot S&D (which I got directly from the website.)

I'm rather unfamiliar with Vista, so I'm wondering if someone can tell me if this is normal Vista behavior?

If it is normal, are the files immediately deleted, or moved somewhere? I tried a search but it didn't come up...

As you're trying to get SpyBot Search and Destroy in Safe Mode, and you're having difficulties with the download - I'd have to wonder if you're infected.
If so, you'll get more help by posting in our Am I Infected forum located here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/forum103.html

I don't think I am...

I was able to download and install Spybot just fine in normal mode, the reason I was following the guide was simply out of paranoia to clean up anything that may be there. I went back to safe mode and tried downloading Winamp, but that also disappeared immediately. I just thought this may be something with Vista.

Have you checked your Downloads folder?
Have you searched your hard drive for the downloaded files?

Yes, I looked in the downloads folder of all the user accounts I have on the PC, including the public folder.

I searched (start > search > find files or folders) using an advanced search, on all local hard drives, including system files and the like (the checkbox) and nothing.

I even tried downloading another file but not closing the Firefox downloads window, when it finished I right clicked but the option to open, or open containing folder, were both greyed out and not selectable.

I think I will post in the Am I Infected forum...

Good luck! This is a poser for me. I'll leave this topic open in case the Am I Infected folks don't find anything wrong.
