laptop screen goes out shortly after login

I have a SONY VAIO laptop with Vista Home on it. About a month ago I started getting some problems with it. Out of the blue, the screen shut off, just went to blank as if the entire computer was shut off. It happens right after login and all the startup functions are performed. I tried to check all the power/energy settings quickly and from what I could see everything looked ok.

Started computer in safe mode and it works like a charm, screen doesn't shut off at all.

I'm stalled and not sure what I can do. (I'm not a computer noob, but I'm not a pro either).

Go to Device Manager and find the make and model of your Display Adapter.
Go to that manufacturer's website and download the latest video driver that they have available.
Uninstall the video driver software from Programs and Features...Uninstall a program
Then uninstall the video device from Device Manager by right clicking on it and selecting Uninstall (if it's not there, don't worry).
Then install the freshly downloaded file by double clicking on it.

Most times it's a problem with your video driver - and the fact that it works in Safe Mode (where your video driver isn't loaded) is pretty good evidence that it's a video issue. There are other things that can cause this - but video drivers are far and away the most common reason.

also i have hear of an overheat issue and blowing out your computer will help also when in safe mode turn down the resolution. less stress on the card
