Note that only one engine was sheered off, not both... And considering that landing in water is like landing on concrete, not a whole lotta damage to the Airbus fuselage... Must have been one great splash landing.
These photos were taken by the crane operator lifting the Airbus out of the Hudson River . He's a friend of my buddy Tommy , a fellow member of the CG Aux. .. They lifted the airliner out of the Hudson yesterday... It's now being's looked at right here in the port of Jersey City ...

I hope that I got them all in the correct order. Amazing, this plane looks like it can be fixed.

It's amazing birds could bring down a plane like that. Maybe screens in the front of the engines may prevent this from happening again.

It's been tested and found to collect small debris after some flying time and block the air flow and destroy engines. So aircraft engines are designed to suck up debris and obliterate it, and still operate. But yes some debris does hit in such a way as to kill an engine. But with another engine they can manage to limp back. But not in this case. Can you say instant glider :flowers:

It's quite rare for an aircraft to lose both engines to bird strikes.

and just a little bit more info.

Over 5,000 bird strikes were reported by the U.S. Air Force in 2007.

Over 7,600 bird and other wildlife strikes were reported for USA civil aircraft in 2007.

So it's more common than most realize. that 12, 600 for US planes alone....... :thumbsup:

Really nice pix,thanks. I watched them di this for a while. it was very cold. I live right ther only at the top of the Palisades cliff. I walked over and watched the day it went down. it's only a few minutes walk for me. It was incredoble to see those people standing on the plane as it drifted down the Hudson towards the battery. Site of the Twin Towers.
He did a great job of placing her down so that it didn't break up. I think the water was 35 and the air around 15 degrees that day.
