Edit: Topic should read as "Windows *not* recognizing..". Thanks

I am running a 2004 Dell PC (not sure of the model) with Windows XP Home Edition, and I have ran diagnostic software to determine that the default sound card is an Intel 82801EB ICH5. I found the driver on this site:

http://www.intel.com/design/motherbd/rc/rc_drive.htm

When I install the driver and restart the PC, windows still claims that there is new hardware ("Multimedia Audio Controller") and won't recognize it under Sounds and Audio Devices in the control panel. The windows new hardware wizard doesn't seem to recognize the driver, either.

Any suggestions?

-David

go to dell.com/support use your model nr, and they will have specific dell drivers for that machine. Download them and for future use, save to a cd.

Uninstall the hardware listed in device manger as "Multimedia Audio Controller", download the correct driver from Dell as stated in the latest post, and then right-click the device list and select "scan for hardware changes". This should prompt for the installation of the new driver and you should walk through a manual install of the driver pointing it to the new downloaded driver from Dell. If this fails as well, check add/remove programs for any sound device software and remove it then complete the process again.

Look on the back, if it's a desktop, or underneath if it's a laptop. You will find tags where it should have the make and model number.
A service tag number will also work

Thanks everyone for your help. Windows recognizes the correct sound card, and the sound card's driver software is successfully recognized and installed.

However, no audio is being outputted. Windows' default volume control is fine, along with the applications' volume controls (using iTunes and RealPlayer for troubleshooting). I have an older PC with which the speakers work fine.

I already tried uninstalling the sound device software and repeating the driver installation steps to no avail. I'm about ready to just call it a shorted-out sound card.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. Thanks again for all of your help.
