the internet storm center lists Today's Internet Threat Level: GREEN (the lowest) yet most of the queries on this site are for help with virus and malware infections.

So do you use up to date anti-virus software? and a reasonably secure internet browser

if yes, which one?
if no, why not?

i use AVG-free, Spybot once in a while, and Firefox 3

next?

i was hoping some of the 1400+ guests here might get the names of some programs that keep machines from stumbling around the internet running someone else' s software and doing god knows what.

AV: NOD32 v3 or Antivir Avira
Firewall: Zone Alarm or Kerio or Sunbelt
Browser: Opera, except when doing MS updates IE7 runs

I use Avast Anti Virus, and I run CCleaner 3-4 times a week. I also use Super Antispyware, which I run about once a week. I normally use IE7 and Firefox but I'm careful where I go and if I go someplace I'm not sure about I run my stuff when done.

I also go to Windows Live One Care and run it every month or so, since they built the program I'm hoping they will find anything my stuff doesn't.. :thumbsup:

I also forgot to mention I sometimes use that stand alone program stinger. I believe it's from mcafee.

Given the nature of the internet, a threat level of green does not mean everything is happy and safe and there is no malware; it just means that there is not some new infection(s) running rampant. Nor does it mean that tomorrow, a new virus might not infect a million computers in a matter of days.
Having an resident, and updated, Anti-virus, your computer behind a firewall, using a safer browser, and having several anti-spyware applications is just common sense. Moreover, and perhaps just as important, is being an informed and cautious internet user, avoiding problematic sites and thoughtless downloading.

Plus to ensure I don't have vulnerabilities lurking from not having the latest updated versions of Java and Flash, I use the online scan at 'Secunia'.
