BleepingComputer.com: Replacing a Gateway 420GR Power Supply

I have a three year old Gateway 420GR (all original hardware, never upgraded). I'm replacing a hard drive that recently died so I figured I might as well swap in a new power supply as well (the old one has been touch and go). The specific replacement part Gateway recommends costs $99.00, but I see power supplies for half that price at newegg.

Any recommendations for a cheaper brand that would be 100% compatible with my existing machine?

That Thermaltake is probably a great choice for your system. Depending on your budget, Corsair makes a great PSU also. This one is twice the price of the Thermaltake, but it should be more efficient and has a higher Amp 12v rail, so might be more stable. I don't know what other components are in your old Gateway, but it might be worth it to think of this one as well.

Just stay away from cheapo psu's like the Bestec...they have a reputation of killing motherboards and other components when they die.

The power supply is the single most important part in your machine; these are both good recommendations.

Sorry for bumping/resurrecting an old topic but I'm in the same boat as the O.P. I just received a PNY Nvidia GeForce GT 220 for Christmas but my original PSU is only ~300W and the card requires at least 350W.
I don't know a thing about installing/replacing PSU's. Would the Thermaltake and Corsair PSU's fit for the Gateway 420GR?

Shouldn't be a problem! I love my Corsair... and I've also had great luck with the Thermaltakes... Corsair is in my personal computer, while Thermaltake is what I use most often in other builds. Good luck!
