I bought an Acer desktop with Vista Home Premium already installed. It came with a free Lexmark x1270 all-in-one printer, scanner, copier allegedly Vista compatible. However, the installation disk was for XP not Vista. All my subsequent efforts have failed and I've tried everything. I've spent two years talking to Lexmark Tech support and reading forums where many others also have this problem. The following article says that Vista locks down XP driver remnants as part of their security, making removal difficult and requiring a microsoft technician. Does anyone have any help for me?

Hi jammen,
Did you try the patch that the article above links to in the 8th paragraph?
If so, did it remove the XP driver and can you get the Vista driver for the Lexmark printer now? If you've had the computer and the printer for two years, there should be a Vista driver now, but according to the article, you'll need to get the XP driver out of the computer before the Vista driver will work. After you uninstall the driver, the printer should show up in your device manager with a yellow warning sign indicating it needs something if the Vista driver is not already on your computer. Request that it update the driver and see if that will work.
Here is a tutorial on using the device manager: http://kb.wisc.edu/helpdesk/page.php?id=5183
If you've spent a lot of time on this already, you may have already tried all this?

You can try this:
Totally uninstall all software and remove the printer from the computer
Download the Windows Installer Cleanup Utility:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301
tick the box by anything that refers to Lexmark and run the app.
Then reinstall using the Vista driver

The patch in the article is for a Dell not an Acer. I referenced the article because of the Vista lockdown problem it mentioned. Thanks, anyway.
