Occasionally I run Win98SE on an old P2-400 system so I can run my very old (DOS) games a lot easier.. Means I can use my ISA stuff, like my AWE32. Also, with the right kit and a well maintained install, Win98SE is both fast and stable. O_O Thank you for confirming that Armand-79th. Win98SE is more stable than WinXP will ever be. Oh look we can now say Win98SE without a space, wonders will never seece. He did not say that W98 was more stable as WinXp. I loved reinstalling Win98SE every month, I had it down to a science. I donated all of my Win98 cd's. |

I've come across serious stability issues with ALL MS OSs, just not so much on my own kit. :D The key with Win98, I feel, is the same with any OS.. use quality kit and maintain a good order to your files and make sure you don't install crap software. Oh, and lots of experiments with different driver versions. >_< -------------------- Where's the beer??

Why do we use 9x/Me? Because not everybody is loaded with enough cash to buy faster computers and new peripherals, as you'd need to run, say, Vista.
And some people, like me, like being able to put a CD into the CD drive without some stupid pop-up asking me what I want to do with the disc. When you have carpal tunnel, it hurts after awhile, having to click-click-click on a bunch of unnecessary windows. Finally, why should perfectly functional computers be tossed into landfills, when they still work? Peripherals are readily available on eBay, freeware abounds, you can surf the 'net with a high-speed connection...I can even make videos with my Win98SE setup. So why should we spend a lot of money just to have the latest toy, when there are so many more important things to buy? Actually, the newer versions of Windows are such a pain, that I've been slowly learning Linux, so I can use a full-featured (and FREE) Linux distro on my existing PC, instead of buying new equipment and paying $200-300 for an operating system. ;) This post has been edited by silverojo: Jan 27 2009, 02:45 AM -------------------- Microsoft software doesn't get released...

When you have carpal tunnel, it hurts after awhile, having to click-click-click on a bunch of unnecessary windows. It can be a pain but with any Windows system if you keep the Shift key pressed while you close the CD drawer it won't autorun and you won't get the annoying message what to do with it. This will also work on USB flash drives as you insert them. This is for WinXP users with flash drives as Win98SE doesn't ask about flash drives when inserted. -------------------- Keith

When you have carpal tunnel, it hurts after awhile, having to click-click-click on a bunch of unnecessary windows. Not necessarily. I believe there is a way to turn off autorun, so you won't even have to do the below method (someone correct me if I"m wrong though) It can be a pain but with any Windows system if you keep the Shift key pressed while you close the CD drawer it won't autorun and you won't get the annoying message what to do with it. ^ You can permanently disable auto-run in Windows 95/98/98SE, but when I tried to do something similar in XP, it didn't work. Admittedly, there might be a way, but the fact remains that it's an annoyance at best, and painful at worst--I have carpal tunnel syndrome, for instance, and it hurts to press down and hold a button that long.
Having used both XP and Vista, I prefer Windows 95/98/98SE, because it's less about silly eye candy and more about productivity. With luck, Windows 7 might be an improvement, but I doubt it. -------------------- Microsoft software doesn't get released...

Personally I am perfectly happy with my perfectly tweaked windows XP PC (it does what I want when I want it). But as Silverojo mentioned, I know a lot of people who do not dispose of the money for a new PC. I love to do maintenance on the 'oldies', all problems are already resolved, no unknown problems. As for myself, I am a kingsquest fan and the games run a lot better on an older OS (dosbox works but not always).

I remember ME. I used it for a couple of days, and then had to format the hard drive and install 98 instead. ME and Vista are both fiascos of MS.

Needless to say newer software (including OSes) = more powerful hardware / resources needed. -------------------- |
