BleepingComputer.com: Many Updates for Vista

Hello,

New to Group.
I have a new HP computer, desktop (two weeks old)
Running Windows Vista Home Premium x64
It is working fine.
Yesterday I started getting updates from Microsoft one at a time, every few minutes.
All seem to say the same thing.
"Security update for Microsoft XML Core Systems 4.0 Service Pack 2
for x64 based systems (KB954430)"
15 yesterday and three today.
Does this seem right and if so is there any way to get them to all download as a group?

Yes. Turn off Automatic Updates and visit Microsoft Update website yourself. It will scan your PC and offer all the available updates currently available which are relevant to your PC and which you don't already have. You will also have the important option of deselecting those you don't want (eg non-security related ones), which can significantly reduce download and installation times, as well as preventing wastage of disk space. With Automatic Updates you don't know what's being downloaded/installed and you don't get to choose what you want/don't want.
Wise Windows users do not allow automatic updates for anything other than antivirus/antispyware programs.

I thought only those with illegal Windows saw any point in turning automatic updates off. Wize for them. If update manually just be sure to do it - and make a list of those updates you dont want. Will be around zero which is where it should be, this one you do want for example You can turn off "Recommended updates" as in not seeing them and they are never forced. And you can tell update to "Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them". Makes more sense than to disable but not necessarily a must if you have much focus on Windows updates. Most do not and eventually will skip/forget, including security updates. Not so good with Windows.

Anyway, when there is a problem find the right solution so go here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/954430 and go down to "issues". There is the endless loop. You end up here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/941729/ where they show how to fix it. With Windows Vista, you cannot go to the Windows Update page in Internet Explorer and expect to download them that way. This is because Microsoft's site automatically launches the Windows Update application in Vista. Vista allows you to see exactly what you are downloading and installing so you can abort download. Automatically installing the updates, without reviewing the to-be-updated list, is not a good idea. It's also a good idea not to install the updates immediately after they are released, in case there is an issue with one of them. Have you tried making Windows Update ignore that patch?
