BleepingComputer.com: Vista Home start-up problems

My daughter has just brought me her Satellite with BIG problems. When we power it up it goes to an error "LogonUI exe- Bad Image. Then in the box it has C:\Windows\system32\UxTheme.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.ect.
When I click OK the screen goes blank again. It won't let me soft boot to get to Task Manager.
She said it started to do this after she plugged in her new Ipod and she can't find or didn't get a Vista cd/dvd.
When I get to the password screen and type it in then I get Windows Calendar has stopped working. I close the box and get Windows Explorer has stopped working, I close that box and get Problem Reportsand solutions has stopped working.
Anything I can do without the cd or do I need to go back to the store?

It seems as if the UxTheme.dll has been modified and/or corrupted. The big matter is this...that DLL is locked and not available for an administrator to modify. The permission policy set on the DLL is TrustedInstaller.

There are a few steps that might work to help solve this problem.

I am going to suggest that the first trial for solving this problem is that we run the Recovery Tool built-in to the Windows Vista DVD.

If this solution does not work, I have two more, so please let me know if this current solution did or did not work.

I did start up the computer in the safe mode with command prompt and ran the scf scannow. This took some time but it did find problems and upon start-up it looks like we are working again. Thank you so much for the help. I am doing a system restore and will look into her computer to see if anything else needs to be cleaned up.
