Brushed the dust off my Windows 98 PC. This computer will ONLY boot up in safe mode. I would like to transfer pictures off the hard drive. I tried an external drive and get no response from the usb port. The external drive does not show up in "My Computer". I do not have a CD/DVD burner installed on this PC. I thought about uploading the pics but I cannot get internet access with this old PC either.

Any suggestion as to how I can retrieve "My Pictures".

Thanks for the help,
t

Edit-- Can I remove the hard drive from the Windows 98 and connect it by a USB-IDE cable to my Windows XP machine? Would it get recognized?

An external USB drive wont work in 98 in safe mode.
May not work in normal mode either depending on the size of the exteral USB drive

Your best bet is to install the hard drive in another computer as a slave and just copy your pics straight over.

BTW where does Windows 98 stop when it tries to load. How far does it get?
Do you get any error messages? If so, we need to know what they are.
Might be something simple

My goodness gracious you answered that post fast. I did not even have time to edit my question. I do have USB-IDE cables and an external power source. I will give it a try.

Thanks for the blazing fast response!!

Whats the config of your XP machine?
IDE cdroms or SATA?

IF IDE just disconnect your cdrom drive(s) and plug the old hard drive into that.
That way you dont have to worry about jumper settings

Eyesee,

Its IDE on the PC.

If I wanted to tranfer to my laptop then would I set the HD to "slave", power it and connect by IDE-USB?

Thanks,

I did not know a laptop was involved
Thought they were both towers. Never assume anything

XP should recognize that drive

Your assumption was correct. 2 towers were the original plan. Just wanted to know all my options though.

If you take the hard drive out from your 98 system make sure it is upside down when you do this
In the beginning there was the command line.

The tower needs to be upside down? Why? Something to do with static electricity?

what`s with the upside down removal thing? never heard of it before as all drives go to park when powered down it shouldn`t matter which oriention you handle a drive. any ways i have one of those usb to ide adapters and the only problem you might encounter is the jumper, as mine wouldn`t read the drive until i took jumpers off. your drive might be different but i think it works best when jumpered as master no slave. mine does{vantec}

The saga continues....

Seamless extraction of the hard drive from the w98 machine. Set it to slave...powered it up....connected by IDE-USB and the drive loaded up....no problem.

Here is where it gets ugly...

Most of the pictures are in a .cps file extension. This is the proprietary file system for an old Corel program called Corel Photoshop. Of course I no longer have the install CD for the program....that would be too easy. I scoured the net for answers to no avail. No file conversion tools out there that I could find. No current programs recognize that file format. I even downloaded a trial version of the newer Corel software and the files were not recognized!!

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
t
