ran msconfig
and chose Start-Up list
one item there had no title and no command - it was just blank
but took up a line and the box on the left was checked [ticked] and the line continued HKLM\SOFTWARE as all the other first items have
it has never been on the start-up list before
I have downloaded new things lately
but surely something should have a title, unless it is malicious?
I unchecked it and closed the list
any ideas what it was, anyone?

Could be something that was not properly removed by an uninstall and is showing up as blank. I suggest you run autoruns as discussed in the pinned topic in this forum and just remove the blank entry altogether. Before doing that, reenable it in Msconfig.
I am almost positive that is not causing anything to run that shouldn't be.
