hey my hard drive has gotten bad sectors
when i let scan disk try to fix it takes for ever
but my brother said its will go faster in dos
what i think too but is that true
and how do i do it in dos


what i gotta do is a thorough scan so what do i type in dos to make it do a thorough scan and only scan drive D and auto fix

What operating system are you using? Windows Me?

If so, the dos flavor won't be any faster. Attempting to fix bad sectors does take "forever". Start before you go to bed and see how it's doing in the morning.

Or, you can run ScanDisk in Safe Mode. You can start Windows in Safe Mode by holding down the [Ctrl] key while your computer starts (before Windows appears). You will then be presented with a menu. Choose Safe Mode and run ScanDisk in Safe mode.

There's a good chance you need to replace the drive before it goes belly up and you lose everything. Back up everything you want to save now.

ah thanks its just that every time i try to copy some thing to it says
BSOD
Disk Write Error
Unable to write to disk in Drive D:
Data or files may be lost
Press any key to continue

then i will press a key and this will come up in a normal windows box
Cannot create or replace 'what ever file i pasting'. Windows is unable to find the file. This item might have already been deleted or moved. Press F5 to refresh the view of this folder

yes i got windows me

the drive is Samsung SP0802N

and scan disk comes every start up saying it wants to do a scan disk and a thorough scan
if i do a thorough scan in safe mode will this annoying thing go away

Your drive has problems and may fail soon. So, back up everything you want to keep now; don't wait.

Go here and download the Samsung utilities for your drive. You can make either a bootable floppy or cd from these 2 files.

You'll notice this page walks you through using the hdd utilities.

Your problem is more than just annoying. Think of how pissed you're gonna be if you lose everything on that drive.

Again, back up what you want to keep now then use the Samsung utility to try and fix the drive.

so i still do the scan disk with thorough option

Yes that’s another pain with WinME no direct access to DOS from the Safe Mode menu. Your best bet to Scandisk in DOS is use a bootable floppy with Scandisk.exe on it. The same goes for formatting a floppy, they format quicker in DOS and you can use from Windows Run: Format A:

The cost of hard drives today doesn't really warrant trying to repair them if it going to take forever. :thumbsup:

You can boot to a Windows 98 startup disk
If you need one you can download it from www.bootdisk.com

Boot to that then from a DOS prompt type

"scandisk d: (or whatever drive letter) /surface" without the quotes

It could take several hours depending on the size of the drive
If you have bad sectors the drive is failing & should be replaced.
In the beginning there was the command line.

I thought you said your master drive was a Samsung SP0802N which is an 80GB drive? Well if thats not your master make it your master. :thumbsup:

Hang on there appears to be a bit of confusion on my part. Which drive is failing the 20GB or the 80GB?

It doesn't really matter which drive is failing get a new one they don't cost much today. :thumbsup:

the 80gb is failing
see my computer came with a 20gb drive then some one gave me a other 20gb drive but then some one else gave me a 80 gb drive
and then i took the 20 gb that some one gave me out and put the 80gb in but now it seems its failing

and computer stuff seems to be a lot of money around my town and i cant use ebay
