BleepingComputer.com: Switched network between vista and xp

hi guys thanks for your help in advance.

i am trying to set up a network between our previous household computer and a computer recently purchased. the new one has vista home premium, the other xp sp2. we had a switch lying around and some cat 5 cabling so i plugged both computers into it and assigned their ip addresses as follows:

Computer A:
IP address: 192.168.0.2
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

Computer B:
IP address: 192.168.0.3
Netmask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.0.1

but nothing happened. on the xp machine it said something about an unidentified network but nothing we did could make it work. network neighbourhood didn't say anything about the other computer on either computer.

interestingly, when i plugged in an ancient computer runnning windows 98 to the switch (keeping the xp machine only plugged in), we discovered through some very lateral thinking that we could play age of empires across the network, even though network neighbourhood would not acknowledge the other computer in any way. the network with the new computer can't even do this though.

under the properties of the network it says it is both sending and receiving information.

is it possible to link xp to vista? am i missing something painfully simple? any help would be greatly appreciated
