OK, I'm wondering if it is possible to share an internet connection through a crossover cable I have. Basically this is just going to be a very temporary solution, just long enough to get updates installed.
The computer with internet is my laptop with Vista Ultimate. The one I want to share to is a desktop with XP Home.

Yes of course you can, and this is THE way the cable should be in order to directly connect two PCs.
You need to set the TCP/IP setting right and the internet connection sharing.
I'm wondering how do you access internet through your laptop.
If it's connected to a cable, than i doubt you have another Ethernet port in it to connect the cross over cable, and if you have wireless at home, why don't you get a wireless adapter for your other PC...
