I do agree with Pandy too - because although I'm sure your Mom did it with the very best of intentions, the little girl's parents base this and other decisions on their particular religious beliefs.
Now that I've said that, I'm about to do a complete 'about face' - gentle smile.
For birthday parties and Christmas are one thing (it wouldn't harm a child physically to miss these things), the refusal of a blood transfusion that can make the difference between life and death for a child ... I'm afraid I would always, always ignore the parent's religious beliefs and simply save the little one's life.

Their Religious Beliefs, regarding Blood Transfusions, also carry on to their Pets as well.I was at my Vets, and he took me out the back room, where a dear little Puppy, was dying, simply because the owners refused to let the Vet, take some blood ,from another animal, and save it's life.Being a Pet lover, this seemed so sad to me.

The unassailable right to refuse medical treatment for oneself is one thing. To do so for someone else, be it a child or someone who is incapable of making their wishes known, it's a whole lot murkier. For myself, I believe that parent's rights are there so that they can do their parental duty: raise a healthy, happy child. A dead child is neither healthy nor happy, therefore parents who refuse to allow life-saving treatments on religious grounds have relinquished all such parental rights. However, an adult, for example, who is comatose and had made their wishes to withhold life-extending treatment clear either through a living will, medical power of attorney, or other means ought to have those wishes carried out.

And I too. Luckily, often our Government here steps in (not for pets, sadly) - but in other cases, things get tied up so long in legal procedures things become moot - and another child dies that didn't have to. Very sad indeed.
