I have a Compaq Presario 5000 purchased in 2000. Model# 5BW284. It has 100 Mhz bus, 512MB of RAM, Pentium III 850MHz processor with Windows XP Pro.

I found a few processors that I think would be compatible with my PC. These are socket 370 in the range of 1.1 to 1.3 MHz. Some are pretty cheap depending on refurbished. Am I going to see noticeable improvement if I install one of these processors? Or is it a waste of time? I even found a new surplus one for $26.

I personally wouldn't invest any more into a machine of this age. I would either plan on building a new computer, or purchasing a newer used computer. Even a three year old computer will have a much faster processor and RAM, and you should be able to pick one up cheaply.

Like dc3 said...no.

It's still a pretty good old machine as it is.

You would need a coppermine core and they max out at 1100Mhz; you would hardly notice the difference of a 250Mhz increase.
