hey i got a windows me pc with 384mb of sd ram but the computer dectecs it as 382mb of ram
thats not my problem
my problem is that my computer is using 114mb of ram
am sure this is not right
in ms config i turned off every thing and only two things are on which are systray and dslaunch.exe is yamaha sound card control panel
its done this for about a year but never did any thing about it
but i thought if i can windows just use about 50mb games would run much better and am sure this is not right because windows me dont use 114mb of ram right?

Check your processes tab in your task manager. See whats eating your memory.

in task manager theres only systray and dslaunch.exe

Is it still using 114MB of RAM?

Open the case & reseat the memory.
Maybe a stick is loose

For Windows to operate you need the minimum of Systray and Explorer that doesn't actually mean Windows Explorer running.

dslaunch.exe is Yamaha DS-XG soundcard, which you don't actually need, have a read.

I think that the system may be allocating memory to the onboard devices such as video, sound and network card.

You have a 256 & a 128 module.
Go into the system BIOS and see how much is being allocated to the onboard video. Could be as much as 128 megs.
The sound and network card could easily use a couple of megs each.
If that doesnt account for the difference, give or take, maybe you have a bad stick of ram.
Try them one at a time and see how the system counts them individually.

i looked at the bios and cant find a option to change how much mb is being put on the graphics card or sound card
my graphics card is a geforce 4 mx 440 pci 64 mb not on board but theres a intel 82810e graphics controller which is on board but disabled in device manager
and my yamaha sound card is not on board but theres a sound card on board which is disabled in the bios

It appears to me that all 384Mb is recognized and working. If I read the question right, a few tweaks might be necessary to free up some memory. Although Trevor stopped updating this site in 2005, it's pretty much the bible for setting up Me. Other pages to help setup Me are out there too and are worth a try.

Also, the Windows 9x kernel is notorious for memory leaks. That memory doesn't actually leak out onto the floor; a program needs some memory to run and doesn't give it all back when that program is terminated. Games are usually the major culprit. The answer is generally to reboot, especially between games.

Me was released 8 years ago when IE5.5 and the various flavors of Netscape/Mozilla used little memory. Now days, you can expect IE6 and FF3 to use quite a bit of memory (the entire 128Mb stick when both are running).

MsInfo can be a big help when you want to see what's going on in Me...

Bottom line: 384Mb is plenty to run Me even with today's memory hogging applications.

A final tip. Don't listen to those who tout Me as the worst Microsoft OS ever. Properly set up, it's both stable and reliable.

can it be becasue i havent got dma
i think i got it. its just not in device manager
i looked at my slave and master drives and the box for dma is not there everything else is there just not the dma box

Sounds like you don't have the motherboard drivers installed. Me has DMA support built in but still needs motherboard drivers installed to implement it.

Time you gave us your system specs as Eyesee asked. If homebuilt or locally built, we need the motherboard make and model number.
