Can anyone tell me why my DVD burner wont recognize the blank I use to burn DVD's on?

My manual says I have a 16x DVD+/-RW with double layer write capability.
It also says it will "read" and "write" DVD+R discs. Im using DVD+R blanks to burn on.
Where am I confused?

What brand of media are you using?

Have you tried using a different brand of DVD?

What application are you using when you insert the media?
