Yes you caan have them both installed just for scans and you shouldn't have any problems. However I would suggest just using Avast! for real time protection, because it monitors a lot of things that many don't monitor.

Yes you can turn on real-time protection with Avast!
If you dont' already see a little greenish blue ball on ur taskbar with the lower-case letter A. Then your real-time protection with Avast! is off. I've tried looking around in the program (when you double click the icon on the desktop, and I haven't found anything.) I'm sorry I not that epxerienced with Avast! -------------------- |

My advice is to stick with Kaspersky and uninstall Avast. I disagree with Yano's advice. Running more than one resident anitvirus , whether you have only one configured for real time protection or not, is detrimental to your security. And most poeple don't know how to configure that anyway.
To get a second opinion, run some free online scans after running your resident AV. Although I have to say I've quit doing that myself since installing KAV. Very little gets past it, including scam emails. Here is a short list of free scanners--there are others: eTrust Antivirus Web Scanner TrendMicro's HouseCall Panda ActiveScan BitDefender Edit: BTW, I'm moving this to the security forum.
