I recently had to have my laptop wiped clean cos it was riddled with allkinds of nasty stuff!! I am currently on a dial up internet service, would I be less likely to get these nasties back if I switched to broadband?

You are shooting the messenger when you need to be concerned with the message itself. Either broadband or dial up will expose you to the same security problems, though since one tends to leave broadband on all the time, it does increase you chances of infection somewhat.
Having a firewall,a resident antivirus, and a couple of anti-spyware applications will help prevent infections with either broadband or dialup connexions; using careful judgement about the sites you visit and what you download will complete the security process.

John
