Smartphones/PDAs vulnerable?

Hi, i was considering buying a smart phone but my sister tells me that they can get virus' and other annoying nasty stuff, is this true? If so, what means of protection could I put into place to prevent this from happening?

I wouldnt be too concerned. The one virus that came out did no harm and was easily removed
