I hate to admit it, but I don't have a plan to recover from a complete catastrophe. Most of my music, pictures, etc., are saved to CD-Rs, but rebuilding all my programs, etc., would be a pain. I do have Acronis software that I used when I replaced my hard disc with a larger drive ... and I suppose I should be using that for full back-ups.
What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
My most devastating loss would be my emails. As mentioned, most of my other data is available off the computer, but my email is all right on the hard disc, not on CD-R.
How would this prize package help you?
Backing up to CD-Rs and DVD-Rs is time consuming -- if I had an external drive the job would be a lot less daunting. Easy jobs tend to get done, while difficult (or unpleasant) jobs get postponed.

My most devastating loss would be my financial information and history. I keep all my tax data and tracking data on my computer.
If I won these new drives I would use the larger one as my main backup drive, and give the smaller to my kids for their laptop.

It's spotty. I have a few flash drives, 1 is 1 GB, the others are 512 MB. I have a few of my files on there and a few of my programs, and a small fraction of my e-mail. However, I need to leave a considerable amount of free space on these drives for files I edit or create and programs I download when I'm on public computers. I usually buy discs of programs so I can reinstall the program if necessary. As you can see, this is a haphazard and incomplete method of backup.
What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
Lessons etc. I've created for tutoring, papers and documents related to my master's work and research, and non-replaceable professional resources. Also, my resume and curriculum vitae information. It would be difficult if not impossible to recreate or acquire duplicates of this material. Losing these documents would have a devastating effect on my building tutoring practice not to mention increased difficulties in applying for jobs.

An external hard-drive would allow me to back up ALL of my documents. It would also allow me to better organize my materials so I could find things faster - a definite boon leaving me more time to plan for lessons and more time to spend with family. I'd even be able, with guidance, to create a "ghost" back up of my entire drive. Given that my computer is already 4+ years old, this would be a very good and necessary backup. If my hard drive failed or if I felt it prudent to get a new one, I could then install a new one and transfer, with assistance, the "ghosted" system onto the new hard-drive.

I actually do not have a major backup plan for my computer. I am using a 20G laptop, with the majority of my files located on an external drive. The external, however, has no backup.
The worst thing to lose, in my opinion, would be the music. I have lost a large amount of music before, when our home computer was reformatted while I was away at college. Since I had only recently obtained my laptop at the time, I hadnt had time to copy all my music to the laptop, and so lost a large portion of the files. The hardest part is not re-obtaining them, but remembering all that was lost (Im sure there are several songs I had that i dont remember having, so may never recover those).
The prize would greatly aid me by providing more storage space to store music, images, and such (I also do a bit with graphics) as well as giving me a drive I can use solely to back up my whole system and all my files.

Hey Everybody,
Well right now it's actually copy and paste and drag and drop to two hard drives....one is a Buffalo Linkstation NAS 300GB for my pictures, documents, videos and ALL of my programs. I'm talking everything from vista software all the way to tax documents. Unfortunately their backup software doesn't work too well with Vista, and the drive itself is almost three years old and i have no idea what kind it is so i really have no idea what the lifespan is, and I tend to get quite a few power outages on it, so I get pretty worried about it. The second is a 120gb seagate that's being used in a enclosure that is actually pretty good. It's ALL of my music for itunes and that actually has the most moves to it , so there's alot of wear and tear to the drive. And the power outages don't help that one either.
That would be the answer to # 2. Music keeps me going from the car, to work, and especially for my home. i have almost 6,000 mp3's. And alot of original rips from my CD's that got stolen out my car a few years ago. The time and effort that has went into that music loss would be horrible. I've had most of it since 1995 (My first Rock Album was Rage Against the Machine Evil Empire)
The answer to #3 is since I'm actually getting an iMac for X-mas

I keep a word processing document with the activation codes for software that require them. This file, files with settings for my e-mail accounts, my browser bookmarks, and my Roboform identities and passcards are all backed up in real time to 2 thumb drives using NTI Shadow. I use Goodsync to automatically back up these same items, as well as my e-mail files, music, pictures, downloads, word processing documents, and other data too to two external Hard Drives (I don't have one big enough for everything).
I use my laptop to take minutes for several nonprofit Boards I serve on. Losing those minutes would be devastating, so I immediately copy them to a flash drive after a meeting finishes, then transfer the files from there to my desktop computer at home. Yes, I’ve lost files before, usually when a hard drive crashed, but the most recent instance was a bad OS patch, and my latest backup to an external HD was bad. I recovered some of my files from an earlier backup, but lost a lot of historical copies of content from websites I had built, and a lot of word processing documents.
This prize would give me the capacity to simplify my backups.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? Mostly losing my music, as well as the changes I've made in iTunes that haven't been written back to the MP3s.
How would this prize package help you? This would allow me to bulk up and handle more mp3s, and to retire my oldest and smallest external drive. It is noisy so this prize would reduce the noise in the room.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? My husband's files. He is military and keeps a lot of his paperwork on there so if that data was lost we would be beyond devastated
How would this prize package help you? This would help me ensure his files are safe and protected.
