What is your current backup plan for your computer?

I hate to admit it, but I don't have a plan to recover from a complete catastrophe. Most of my music, pictures, etc., are saved to CD-Rs, but rebuilding all my programs, etc., would be a pain. I do have Acronis software that I used when I replaced my hard disc with a larger drive ... and I suppose I should be using that for full back-ups.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

My most devastating loss would be my emails. As mentioned, most of my other data is available off the computer, but my email is all right on the hard disc, not on CD-R.

How would this prize package help you?

Backing up to CD-Rs and DVD-Rs is time consuming -- if I had an external drive the job would be a lot less daunting. Easy jobs tend to get done, while difficult (or unpleasant) jobs get postponed.

I have a Seagate external drive and I use the Mimeo auto backup software.

My most devastating loss would be my financial information and history. I keep all my tax data and tracking data on my computer.

If I won these new drives I would use the larger one as my main backup drive, and give the smaller to my kids for their laptop.

What I typically do to back up my computer is load it onto an external harddrive. My most important things are my emails and school work files and if I lose those I'm screwed. The prize would help give me more room to save my critical files anytime I needed to back them up before I had to do a restore if I had to.

What is your current backup plan for your computer?

It's spotty. I have a few flash drives, 1 is 1 GB, the others are 512 MB. I have a few of my files on there and a few of my programs, and a small fraction of my e-mail. However, I need to leave a considerable amount of free space on these drives for files I edit or create and programs I download when I'm on public computers. I usually buy discs of programs so I can reinstall the program if necessary. As you can see, this is a haphazard and incomplete method of backup.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?

Lessons etc. I've created for tutoring, papers and documents related to my master's work and research, and non-replaceable professional resources. Also, my resume and curriculum vitae information. It would be difficult if not impossible to recreate or acquire duplicates of this material. Losing these documents would have a devastating effect on my building tutoring practice not to mention increased difficulties in applying for jobs.

How would this prize package help you?

An external hard-drive would allow me to back up ALL of my documents. It would also allow me to better organize my materials so I could find things faster - a definite boon leaving me more time to plan for lessons and more time to spend with family. I'd even be able, with guidance, to create a "ghost" back up of my entire drive. Given that my computer is already 4+ years old, this would be a very good and necessary backup. If my hard drive failed or if I felt it prudent to get a new one, I could then install a new one and transfer, with assistance, the "ghosted" system onto the new hard-drive.

I actually do not have a major backup plan for my computer. I am using a 20G laptop, with the majority of my files located on an external drive. The external, however, has no backup.

The worst thing to lose, in my opinion, would be the music. I have lost a large amount of music before, when our home computer was reformatted while I was away at college. Since I had only recently obtained my laptop at the time, I hadnt had time to copy all my music to the laptop, and so lost a large portion of the files. The hardest part is not re-obtaining them, but remembering all that was lost (Im sure there are several songs I had that i dont remember having, so may never recover those).

The prize would greatly aid me by providing more storage space to store music, images, and such (I also do a bit with graphics) as well as giving me a drive I can use solely to back up my whole system and all my files.

I'd hate to lose pictures and financial info on my PC. I currently back up over my home network to an external hard drive on another computer. This prize would let me keep the backup locally (i.e., attached to my PC, rather than the network).

Hey Everybody,

Well right now it's actually copy and paste and drag and drop to two hard drives....one is a Buffalo Linkstation NAS 300GB for my pictures, documents, videos and ALL of my programs. I'm talking everything from vista software all the way to tax documents. Unfortunately their backup software doesn't work too well with Vista, and the drive itself is almost three years old and i have no idea what kind it is so i really have no idea what the lifespan is, and I tend to get quite a few power outages on it, so I get pretty worried about it. The second is a 120gb seagate that's being used in a enclosure that is actually pretty good. It's ALL of my music for itunes and that actually has the most moves to it , so there's alot of wear and tear to the drive. And the power outages don't help that one either.

That would be the answer to # 2. Music keeps me going from the car, to work, and especially for my home. i have almost 6,000 mp3's. And alot of original rips from my CD's that got stolen out my car a few years ago. The time and effort that has went into that music loss would be horrible. I've had most of it since 1995 (My first Rock Album was Rage Against the Machine Evil Empire)

The answer to #3 is since I'm actually getting an iMac for X-mas :flowers: so a hard drive with GOOD backup software would help out alot, and i could keep everything i have centralized. And even use Time machine to the best of it's ability

I keep a word processing document with the activation codes for software that require them. This file, files with settings for my e-mail accounts, my browser bookmarks, and my Roboform identities and passcards are all backed up in real time to 2 thumb drives using NTI Shadow. I use Goodsync to automatically back up these same items, as well as my e-mail files, music, pictures, downloads, word processing documents, and other data too to two external Hard Drives (I don't have one big enough for everything).

I use my laptop to take minutes for several nonprofit Boards I serve on. Losing those minutes would be devastating, so I immediately copy them to a flash drive after a meeting finishes, then transfer the files from there to my desktop computer at home. Yes, I’ve lost files before, usually when a hard drive crashed, but the most recent instance was a bad OS patch, and my latest backup to an external HD was bad. I recovered some of my files from an earlier backup, but lost a lot of historical copies of content from websites I had built, and a lot of word processing documents.

This prize would give me the capacity to simplify my backups.

I really don't have a good backup plan right now. I would hate to lose the pictures and excel/word documents I have saved on my PC. I need to take care of this!

What is your current backup plan for your computer? I use an external drive for most of my bulky data, like mp3s. I have a second external drive, bigger, for backup of the first external drive as well as other content on my home computer. I backup on a quarterly basis unless I add a large amount of data for some purpose that I wouldn't want to lose.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? Mostly losing my music, as well as the changes I've made in iTunes that haven't been written back to the MP3s.

How would this prize package help you? This would allow me to bulk up and handle more mp3s, and to retire my oldest and smallest external drive. It is noisy so this prize would reduce the noise in the room.

Unfortunately about a month ago I lost ALL of our family pictures and ALL of the graphics I have made for my business in the last ten years. Devastation is the only way to describe what I feel. The real tragedy is that I have a little back-up hard drive AND a 4 gig jump stick and had everything backed up on those. The little hard drive died on the same day as my laptop (no virus, just old age and natural causes I think)and the jump stick has disappeared into the abyss. Very sad. Needless to say, I know so well the value of back of my data and don’t ever want to do it again! Right now on my computer, I have a few of our family pics that I have been able to get from my blog as well as a few graphics. The most important info I have right now though is my first novel that I have been slaving away at–there’s no way I want to lose that; if I won this prize I would be able to sleep soundly at night and not have to worry about any of this any more!

My current backup solution is to burn the occasional CD/DVD of important data. Luckily I have never had a major “incident” losing any important data on the various Macs I’ve owned over the years, but as I start to collect more precious family photos, important docs, etc., I realize that the aforementioned is not very efficient and that there is a great potential for loss…I guess I should be shopping around for an external hard drive, time to join the 21st Century.

What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted? My husband's files. He is military and keeps a lot of his paperwork on there so if that data was lost we would be beyond devastated
How would this prize package help you? This would help me ensure his files are safe and protected.

I'd hate to lose all my music, school work, finances, etc. I currently back up daily to an external hard drive, which is a bit too small, so this prize would be awesome.
