I have just started making and editing home movies and this would be my most devastating loss.
This stylish Free Agent would make it a pleasure to backup movies which take up a lot a space. I would love the green one!

Irregular backup of data to an external disk.
What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
I think it would be my pictures - many are backed up but I don't have enough room on the disk for everything.
How would this prize package help you?
I would have enough room, and with two backup disks I could make a realistic backup plan.

I have to admit I don't have one, unless you count burning important files to a disk for safety (Mainly pictures).
What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
I would say pictures. I have old pictures of my grandparents that were scanned and later the originals were lost. I would hat to lose them since both of them have passed away.
How would this prize package help you?
It would make it so much easier to just overwrite any updates, and slow down the growing # of disc's I keep.

Daily script mirroring entire /home directory to external drive using rdiff-backup on Debian/Ubuntu Linux. Most important documents also occasionally synced to flash drive using unison. Photographs occasionally burned to CD/DVD.
What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
Documents definitely, followed closely by email then pictures.
How would this prize package help you?
As the current external drive is nearing size limit, I've had to remove some of the oldest rdiff-backup records. With the bump in space, I would be able to keep a much longer listing of diffs from the current home directory mirror.

If I had a computer, or have the authority to set up a computer, I would not install any sort of virus program on the computer, as these slow the computer down. Instead, I would use the FireFox or Maxthon browswers, and not allow those who don't know how to recognize dangerous websites from, using my computer alone. I may install something small and simple, like Spybot, but I would not be likely to run it very often because the scan itself slows down your computer, and tehre is very rarely a time when I have few enough things going on a computer I have access to that a scan would not make it impossible to continue doing my work. If the computer seems to be having a problem which I am going to attempt to fix, I may burn files onto a CD, but that first requires the ability to find or obtain a CD, second requires a lot of sorting, and third, cannot hold all data especially application settings, which, if every application was set up in one sitting, would take hours.
Most files I have no are stored in my Yahoo! e-mail, by sending them as attachments to myself. However, this creates a lot of confusion in my inbox, and when I finally get a computer, there will be many files that are no longer neeeded. Some are duplicates because I may have saved them to a computer I was using, and then included them in a zip of "my files" when I was going to have to leave that computer. Or, I may have saved the same file more then once because I was not sure if I already had it. Some files are too large to be stored in e-mail, and many files are lost because, for example, if I did not have to store in e-mail, I would take the time to acquire much more music, which is something I very much relate to.
What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
The most devastating is when important IM conversations are lost. Sometimes this happens when I am being screamed at to shut down the computer immediately, or when the ncomputer shuts down automatically but Yahoo! is having server trouble and I don't have time to save the convo because it takes a long time to do through the web. It is also possible that any website, even Yahoo!, could delete itself or suddenly put a limit on free accounts. Some of these IM conversations are the only connection I have to poeple that I deeply care about - that is, we currently no longer talk that way or the person has moved or no longer likes me. The other most important thing is their pictures. Some of these pictures are of people who no longer like me, people who have died, or people who no longer look the same way, when the way they look in the picture is the one that fills me with happiness. Some of these files are stored on my mother's computer, because shye has dial-up internet access which is too slow to allow anything to be attached in Yahoo! e-mail. She could easily reformat or even throw away her computer without contacting me at all, as she has done before.

I am homeless, so an external hard drive is the only way to keep program settings intact, and the only way to even run the programs in some locations. Many locations allow you to run any program you have, as long as you don't install anything. Another way I very frequently lose data is if the computer I am on is slow, or I am made to leave the location earlier then expected, or the computer simply restarts itself without warning but is on a "reset-at-restart"... thing. When I have an external hard drive, all of my application data is saved (I copy the %appdata% folder and then delete my own programs from that folder before I leave), so I don't have to spend time setting up options in 10 different programs before I can begin using a computer. This also allows me to keep my websites open, so that I do not have to send the URLs to my e-mail, forget they were there or get invovled in something new and then be unable to find the e-mail three days alter when I'm readsy to go back, be unsure if I have already finished with some of those URLs, etc. I use the internet to make money on various websites that give you small amounts money for doing practically nothing, although it is a time-consuming nothing, to search for jobs, to make sure my website accounts do not get so overwhelemed with messages that recovery is impossible, as well as it, most importantly, being the only reliable and always-accessible way to communicate with my freinds and boyfriend, who are frequently suicidal at times and need me, or with my family, who will allow me to take showers or give transportation. As an example, I once was looking for an affordable cell phone on the internet. This requires hours of websearching to scour the least-known companies for prices that are actually not ridiculously expensive and impossible for a homeless person, and it also requires keeping 30+ internet tabs open for days until you have finished researching and calculating exactly which one would be best if any. I almost never have enough time online to actually accomplish what Iam trying to ccomplish, and this is in large part do to the time required to set up program options every time you access a computer, the furhter time spent figuring out how to access applications without an external harddrive on some computers, and the constant re-downloading, re-uploading, and searching for files and saved URLs through e-mail. It will also allow me to get the files off my mother's computer to ensure they are not lost - many of those IM conversations are on her computer, but go on every day, all day long, for a year and a half, and threfore still cannot be saved without an external HD. My last external hard drive was stolen.
I really need this and would be extremely grateful if I am choosen as the winner.

Losing the pictures would break my heart, but there are also fragments of poems in progress that I have rescued from scraps of paper. I'd have a hard time if I lost them.

Currently use two external hard drives for backup, a 80GB HD and a 125GB HD. Back up is done once a day to both HDs.
The worse-case scenario loss would be my videos. Amassing videos for entertainment and education.
The prize package would greatly increase my storage capacity.

My current backup plan is to burn several DVD-R (4.7GB) discs.
Itīs a cheap and relyable solution.
What would be the most devastating loss of data (ie. pictures, email, music, etc) for you, if your hard drive failed or the data was deleted?
My most devastating loss of data would be my childrenīs photos. Everything else I could replace, but, that photos are unique.
How would this prize package help you?
I would have a more flexible and faster backup solution, because I canīt edit or replace the photos I have recorded in a DVD-R disc.
Good luck to everyone!

My current back up plan is to upload important files to my webserver, but I really don't backup as much as as I should - photos, emails, etc are rarely backed up (yes, yes, I know.. bbbbaaaddd!!!)
The most devastating stuff that I would lose would be pictures and emails. Not too fussed about music.
The prize package would help me backup my files - and, 1TB!! That's heaps of room, and the drives look gorgeous :D

My current backup plan is to burn everything to cds or dvds. Not the best option at all.
The loss of my photos and music would be the biggest blow if my hard drive failed. Of course I could replace the music at a cost, but the photos are irreplaceable.
This prize package would allow me to back up my data efficiently and give me piece of mind knowing that my data is secure. It would also free up valuable space on my hard drive.
Thanks!

My backup plan is that I save my documents and photos to my email account whenever I have a chance. I would be devasted if my hard drive failed becasue I would lose all of the pictures of my family, as well as all of the essays I have wrote over the years. I don't even want to think about that.
If I won this prize package, I would feel good knowing that I could backup my files whenever I want. I would do this with every new file I save to my computer, since I have a old computer that has only 4 GB of hard drive space and may fail at any time.
