My Excel document icons today disappeared and then reappeared as Illustrator icons with an Excel name. The file is still good and opens as an Excel document but the icon is an Illustrator icon. Does anyone know what is happening here? Thanks.

Yes, rebooting did restore the correct icons but it was unsettling. Things that go away by themselves can come back by themselves. Do you think I may have a logic board problem?
