Live Messenger Smiley Prob Can't send Smileys on Live Messenger

I cannot seem to send smileys when on live messenger.... :huh:

I type the shortcut or add from the usual menu and it displays in the message window..However when l try and send it...nothing happens.....? Please help, this is driving me mad...?
