I am writing from my own laptop, but the problem I am having is with another laptop.

It is a Sony Vaio running Windows Vista.

I am getting an error message when trying to turn it on--

Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:

1. Insert you Windows installation disc and restart your computer.
2. Choose language settings, click next
3. Click "repair your computer"

If you do not have the disc (of course, I don't!) contact your system admin or computer manufacturer for assistance.

File: \Windows\system32\config\system

Status: 0xc000014c

Info: Windows failed to load because the system registry file is missing or corrupt.

Typically the system32 Files I would simply replace and expect to get back in to Windows, but with The Registry file being purported as Damaged or missing I would recommend re-installing windows. You can get restore CD's from your manufacturer.

If you tap the F8 key on boot and get options to boot into other modes, I would pick Last known good configuration as you might fix the problem this way.
Not likely, but it's worth a shot.

Good Luck
