I ran an exe file to download software which had dropped url shortcuts on the desktop, favorites and start menu and I deleted these, then I noticed infection because I got a popup warning whenever I try to use windows explorer. The popup would say that I am infected with some sort of virus and that I needed to install software to eliminate it. I haven't installed the software but I had clicked yes to see what the software was - anyway since I had the popup I thought that the pc was already infected to some degree - there I got the message to download and install windefender2009, and I cancelled the download. I scanned the pc with my avast free and found the file psguax.dll in c:\windows\system32 and quarantined it. The popup has since disappeared but I could find traces of the file and windefender2009 in the registry so I am not completely sure that I am safe. Thanks. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 21:11:52, on 18/11/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodata Limited Shared\Service\ADCDLicSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe C:\Program Files\IVT Corporation\BlueSoleil\BTNtService.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD\ULCDRSvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\RunDll32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\WINDOWS\TBPanel.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpohmr08.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpotdd01.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpoevm08.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\Bin\hpoSTS08.exe C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\NOTEPAD.EXE C:\Program Files\ExplorerXP\ExplorerXP.exe C:\Program Files\HijackThis\HiJackThis.exe R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59- B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB- D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\ssv.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4 \ashDisp.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Gainward] C:\WINDOWS\TBPanel.exe /A O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RunDLL32.exe NvMCTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UVS10 Preload] C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 10\uvPL.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BluetoothAuthenticationAgent] rundll32.exe bthprops.cpl,,BluetoothAuthenticationAgent O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CloneCDTray] "C:\Program Files\SlySoft\CloneCD\CloneCDTray.exe" /s O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32 \CTFMON.EXE (User 'LOCAL SERVICE') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32 \CTFMON.EXE (User 'NETWORK SERVICE') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32 \CTFMON.EXE (User 'SYSTEM') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'SYSTEM') O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32 \CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user') O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'Default user') O4 - Global Startup: hp psc 1000 series.lnk = ? Hello!
My name is Sam and I will be helping you. I will do my best to communicate clearly to you so that we can resolve your issues as quickly as possible. In order to see what's going on with your computer I will ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to fix your computer. Please communicate freely with me about how your computer is reacting and behaving as we work through this process. Please download random's system information tool (RSIT) and save it to your desktop.
-------------------- If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it! ======================================================== |

Nice to meet you Ken.
So far it looks like you've done a good job cleaning this up yourself. But let's run a thorough scan and double check. Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop. alternate download link 1 alternate download link 2

Good!
Now let's get another look at a new log from RSIT. How is your computer behaving? Any problems or issues? -------------------- If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again. Please thank your helpers and there will always be help here when you need it! ======================================================== |

Ok Sam here is the RSIT log...No problems encountered whatsoever - PC is behaving normally. In between our replies I worked with the PC normally: browsing, reading email, downloading stuff etc and all seems well. When posting the logs I noticed an entry(ies) regarding a process Narrator.exe. I'm not sure if its starting up automatically or not. Is there any chance we get rid of it?
PS This time I only got the log file from the RSIT application - I did not get the info text file. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Logfile of random's system information tool 1.04 (written by random/random) Run by Ken at 2008-11-20 07:54:07 Microsoft Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 System drive C: has 62 GB (81%) free of 76 GB Total RAM: 1023 MB (66% free) Logfile of Trend Micro HijackThis v2.0.2 Scan saved at 07:54:15, on 20/11/2008 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Boot mode: Normal Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\aswUpdSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashServ.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Autodata Limited Shared\Service\ADCDLicSvc.exe C:\Program Files\Grisoft\AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5\guard.exe C:\Program Files\IVT Corporation\BlueSoleil\BTNtService.exe C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamservice.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvsvc32.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Ulead Systems\DVD\ULCDRSvr.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashMaiSv.exe C:\Program Files\Alwil Software\Avast4\ashWebSv.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\RunDll32.exe C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe C:\WINDOWS\TBPanel.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpohmr08.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpotdd01.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\bin\hpoevm08.exe C:\Program Files\Hewlett-Packard\Digital Imaging\Bin\hpoSTS08.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Ken\Desktop\RSIT.exe C:\Program Files\HijackThis\Ken.exe R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896 O2 - BHO: Adobe PDF Reader Link Helper - {06849E9F-C8D7-4D59-B87D-784B7D6BE0B3} - C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX\AcroIEHelper.dll O2 - BHO: SSVHelper Class - {761497BB-D6F0-462C-B6EB-D4DAF1D92D43} - C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\ssv.dll O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7E853D72-626A-48EC-A868-BA8D5E23E045} - (no file) O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Cmaudio] RunDll32 cmicnfg.cpl,CMICtrlWnd O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [avast!] C:\PROGRA~1\ALWILS~1\Avast4\ashDisp.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Gainward] C:\WINDOWS\TBPanel.exe /A O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvCplDaemon] RUNDLL32.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\NvCpl.dll,NvStartup O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [nwiz] nwiz.exe /install O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [NvMediaCenter] RunDLL32.exe NvMCTray.dll,NvTaskbarInit O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UVS10 Preload] C:\Program Files\Ulead Systems\Ulead VideoStudio 10\uvPL.exe O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [BluetoothAuthenticationAgent] rundll32.exe bthprops.cpl,,BluetoothAuthenticationAgent O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe Reader Speed Launcher] "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\Reader_sl.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [SunJavaUpdateSched] "C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.6.0_07\bin\jusched.exe" O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [CloneCDTray] "C:\Program Files\SlySoft\CloneCD\CloneCDTray.exe" /s O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware] "C:\Program Files\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\mbamgui.exe" /starttray O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-19\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'LOCAL SERVICE') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-20\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'NETWORK SERVICE') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-220523388-854245398-725345543-500\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\ctfmon.exe (User 'Administrator') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'SYSTEM') O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-18\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'SYSTEM') O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\Run: [CTFMON.EXE] C:\WINDOWS\system32\CTFMON.EXE (User 'Default user') O4 - HKUS\.DEFAULT\..\RunOnce: [RunNarrator] Narrator.exe (User 'Default user') O4 - Global Startup: hp psc 1000 series.lnk = ? Your log looks good to me!
Here's some info on narrator, including how to turn it off. http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/a...atorturnon.mspx Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

Thanks a lot for your help throughtout Sam!
Followed your last instructions re: system restore & internet explorer settings (I mainly use firefox but adjusted the settings as recommended) Do you mind answering a couple of more questions please? I reckon I can now delete the RSIT program from my PC right? I kinda liked that Malwarebytes program you suggested during the cleaning process. Do you suggest I keep it and get rid of the AVG antispyware that I currently use? I thought that MBAM did a better job than AVG. I rarely have issues of this kind but curiosity got the better of me this time and I ran an exe file that I downloaded - yes it looked suspicious but I had scanned it with Avast & AVG antispyware before running it and they found nothing! Currently I use the following programs for security: Avast Free, AVG antispyware, Spywareblaster, Windows Firewall (& maybe MBAM). Do you think I should change any of these or am I ok? Like I said I rarely have problems, normally Avast does quite a good job and I don't know what Spywareblaster actually is doing as it is sort of 'hidden' and does not scan but I suppose its doing a good job as well. Thanks again for your time! |

QUOTE Do you mind answering a couple of more questions please? Not at all. CODE I reckon I can now delete the RSIT program from my PC right? Yes, that's right. You can just delete the file. QUOTE I kinda liked that Malwarebytes program you suggested during the cleaning process. Do you suggest I keep it and get rid of the AVG antispyware that I currently use? I thought that MBAM did a better job than AVG. Malwarebytes does seem to have a better handle on the more current malware. It won't hurt to keep them both as long as you don't run them at the same time. QUOTE I rarely have issues of this kind but curiosity got the better of me this time and I ran an exe file that I downloaded - yes it looked suspicious but I had scanned it with Avast & AVG antispyware before running it and they found nothing! Shoulda gone with your instincts. QUOTE Currently I use the following programs for security: Avast Free, AVG antispyware, Spywareblaster, Windows Firewall (& maybe MBAM). Do you think I should change any of these or am I ok? I think that's pretty good. Just keep them all updated. QUOTE Like I said I rarely have problems, normally Avast does quite a good job and I don't know what Spywareblaster actually is doing as it is sort of 'hidden' and does not scan but I suppose its doing a good job as well. Spywareblaster actually keeps malware from ever getting to you. It won't help once your infected, but if you keep it updated and enable all protection it'll prevent a lot of problems for you.-------------------- If I have helped you in any way, please consider a donation to help me continue the fight against malware.Failing to respond back to the person that is giving up their own time to help you not only is insensitive and disrespectful, but it guarantees that you will never receive help from me again.
