Weird error code on a Dell Dimension 8400

Ok, so here is the issue. Everytime I boot up this particular Dell It locates everything alright but just as it starts to read the HDD I get this really weird code.
So weird in fact I cannot type the whole thing as I do not know where to find the characters. This is as close as I can get : Bè$ It has a long bar on either side of it and it repeats it twice in a row. Oh and the box is actually solid white and half the size of the funny e. I am at a complete loss. I have changed memory, changed HDD. What else could it be? I can get into the Bios just fine and everything reports as normal. Help.

Computer Specs:

P4 3.0ghz HT
2gb Patriot memory
ide dvd burner
ide 160 Seagate HDD (Boot Drive)
Sata 120 HDD (Storage)
Windows XP sp3
PCIE Radeon 512 Video Card
everything else onboard

Hi.

You describe it as an error code which occurs with each boot.

If that's true, it should be easy to read the entire thing when the screen displays the message.

If you can post such, it will be useful.

All I can suggest is to find out who makes the hard drive and go to their support site and download the diagnostic utility and run it
