Alright, so here’s the story…
After coming home last night, I was on PokerStars playing for money in a 9 person tournament. After doubling my chips and eliminating one person, all of my programs started closing and I realized it was because of a Windows Update. Since I was in a rush to get back to the tournament, I started to hold the button that shuts the computer down within a few seconds, soon realizing that the windows updates hadn’t completed and so my laptop was shut down in the middle of update 2 out of 3. I had thought the updates were completed already and that just a restart was necessary for them to take effect and so by the time I took my finger off of the button it was too late to prevent the premature shut down.
I have a lot of important stuff on my laptop that I would prefer not being lost so I’m hoping there’s some solution. I have a Gateway FX:
Type: Intel ® Core™ 2 Duo CPU T5450 @ 1.66GHz
Speed: 1666 Mhz
Cache Ram: 2048 KB
Memory: 3072MB
When I try to start the computer normally, the windows loading screen shows up for a few seconds and then there’s a flash. After the flash there’s a blue screen that shows up that has some writing but flashes so fast that it’s really hard to read. Eventually a message shows that says:
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
Check to be sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for driver updates. Try changing video adaptors.
Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates. Disable stop memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need to use Safe Mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F8 to select advanced startup options and then select Safe Mode.
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x0000008E (0x0000005, 0xA3316B16, 0x9926F898, 0x00000000)
*** win32k.sys – Address A3316B16 base at A3200000, DateStamp 48d1b6cb
Contact your system admin or technical support group for further assistance.
After a that a screen gives the options of:
Launch Startup Repair (recommended)
Start Windows Normally
When I chose to Launch Startup Repair I get the message:
Windows cannot repair this computer automatically
If you have recently attached a device to this computer, such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you continue to see this message, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistance.
Click Finish to exit and shut down your computer.
At this point I also have another 2 options:
1. View diagnostic and repair details
2. View advanced options for system recovery and support
When I click on the first option it says:
Root cause found:
---------------------------
Unspecified changes to system configuration might have caused the problem.
Repair action: System Restore
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x490
Time taken = 0 ms
Repair action: System files integrity check and repair
Result: Failed. Error code = 0x2
Time taken = 30186 ms
For the second option I have to log on and I can choose from:
1. Startup Repair
2. System Restore
3. Windows Complete PC Restore
4. Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool
5. Command Prompt
6. Recovery Manager
When I click on Windows Complete PC Restore a message comes up that says:
No valid backup locations could be found.
Windows cannot find a backup on the hard disks or DVDs on this computer. Attach the correct hard disk or insert the last backup DVD and then start the restore process again.
I know that my laptop came with a program/drive that backed up all the files on it…
I have the operating systems disc and when windows loads the files and I boot from it, it gives me the options to:
Install now
What to know before installing Windows
Repair your computer
When I click on Repair your computer I can select my Microsoft Windows Vista Operating System and it gives the same options as stated earlier…
I also can’t get to Safe Mode after initially pressing F8
I hope someone can help…
Thanks
