Hi,

I'm not sure if I'm in the right section.

The brilliant Panda has helped me on the Hijack section and I'm all clear with a virus I had.

I'm now asking for some advice with another problem I have.

Every time I restart my comp, it gets 1 minute into loading and then freezes, if I try to move the cursor it leaves a trail and then jams up. I have to reboot usually about four times before it will start properly.

I think it may be something to do with AVG free, if I can get to the control panel and stop AVG quick enough it seems to allow windows to load.

I have tried uninstalling and re-installing AVG but it's still the same. I have also looked at the autorun thingy but don't really know what I'm looking at, a bit scared of making any changes.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance for any help.

Ruth

If you look for a file that points to AVG in autoruns and disable it from startup, it should fix the freezing IF it is AVG that is causing it. Also try reinstalling AVG as that may fix the problem.

thanks xbx

I have re-installed avg several times, no change.

I need AVG in start-up, don't I? Would that mean that I need to start it manually every time if I delete it from start up?

As you can tell I'm not very good with this computer lark.

Yes that would mean you would have to manually start it. If it is AVG free you may want to try uninstalling it and using another free antivirus such as Avira

I'll try that tomoz. I've been with AVG for a long time, never had any problems and trust it. I suppose I can always re-install it if it turns out that AVG isn't the problem. I'm just reluctant to change anything after the recent problems I've had.

Thanks again,

Ruth

Avira is a GREAT, actually I think it IS the top or one of the top free AV programs. But if you want to stick with AVG that's fine, still I would uninstall it to see if that corrects anything.

It is an AVG problem.

This has been cut and pasted from another part of the forum:

Quote

If you are an AVG user, you probably ended up today with a user32.dll failure or a constantly rebooting xp.
This problem is due to a false positive result.

Actually AVG's new update detected USER32.dll as a Trojan.Horse.

To fix you must:

1. Boot in safe mode and go into the quarantine folder to restore USER32.dll to its original place.

2. If that doesn't work, you'll have to plus your hdd in another computer and copy the user32.dll from the c:/windows/$uninstallKB925902$
to the c:/windows/system32.

AVG already solved this issue but you have to update your database to current before scanning.

Check the thread here, AVG have now designed a tool to fix the USER32.dll problem.

I have got rid of AVG and installed Avira free, start up is fine now.

Very pleased, thanks for your help.

It says that Avira cannot check email, is there another option for this? I also have A-squared, and spybot, should I be using anymore to be safe?

The paid version of Avira provides email protection...but I see no need for email scanning/the paid version.

Email protection is mostly afforded by user safe-computing practices, although Outlook Express does provide additional filters which a user can employ if he/she wants to.

And...if a user receives a questionable email...the simple solution is the same which is applied to a questionable download. Just right-click and scan that file/item with your AV program.

When I used AVG 7.5, it scanned incoming and outgoing emails...which did nothing but slow down the access to either for me. I like Avira better.

AVG also has a known issue with some versions of Roxio. Do you have Roxio on your computer? If so, remove it, or upgrade it to a new version and then AVG will work.

Free version doesn't provide e-mail scanning (I don't think) but Avira is a great free Anti-virus. I have had no problems with it in the past/present.

Hope you enjoy Avira as much as I do :flowers:

You are very welcomed for the help, that's what BC is for. Be sure to tell your friends about us!

agreed, Avira is a great program, works very well and has a very good database, email protection is nice to have but the best thing to do for that is just do not open an email from someone you do not know.
