If you would rather not have Firefox display autocomplete results at all:

1. In the Location bar, type about:config, and press EnterReturn.
* The about:config "This might void your warranty!" warning page may appear. Click I'll be

careful, I promise!, to continue to the about:config page.

2. Type this in where it says Filter: browser.urlbar.maxRichResults

3. Double-click the browser.urlbar.maxRichResults preference and enter a value of -1.

4. Then close FireFox
.
5. Start Firefox again.

Now when you type in the Location bar, no list of results will be shown.

Cheers

about:config brings up the whole list, but browser.urlbar.maxRichResults is not in it, neither can I get to it by hitting preference

any thoughts on why it might not be there?

Just noticed the changes in the new Firefox, thanks for pointing that out. I dug up a few links of interest.

Does doing this help provide protection against some trojans and other viruses? I just disabled some similar functions, but didn't know about this tip until now.

No, it just disables the annoying drop down list of sites/bookmarks that appear as you're typing in a website.
