I have a Lite-On DL DVD burner that won't burn dl disc's no matter what program i try and use nero, alcohol 120%, or dvd decrypter i get an error message telling me that it's an illegal disc and the burn process has failed. I have the latest firmware for the burner as far as i can tell and i'm using Ritek Ridata 8X DVD+R DL discs. I would appreciate any help in trying to get this problem solved
Thanks,
detsaw2

What is the exact error message...and at what point does it appear?

What model Lite-On burner do you have? Never mind, I see it in the heading.

Try some Verbatim dual layer disks (avoid "Made in India"). The Ritek and CMC dual layer disks are pretty much garbage. Learned my lesson the hard way trusting data to those two brands, but I got suckered by really low prices.

Burning at a slower speed is the first thing i tried and that didn't work but as far as the discs themselves you may have something, the Ritek are made in Taiwan. If anyone has anything else it is all apreciated.

LITE-ON SHM-165H6S - Writing to a dual layer DVD. Addresses the ILLEGAL DISC / ILLEGAL DISK error situation in Nero StartSmart. The message from Record Now is "Please insert a blank or rewritable disc into the LITE-ON DVDRW (D:) drive".

The following assumes you know some basic things about Windows XP. Creating a Restore Point. Editing the registry. If you have a different OS, this may be helpful in guiding you towards making similar changes in your OS. Please be sure to readeverything below before actually doing anything. You need to understand what all the steps are before plowing forward!

Here we go:
Create a Restore Point.

RUN regedit.

Export the registry as a backup precaution.

Navigate to this registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. Be sure you are working in CurrentControlSet, as there are other similarly named folders.

In the RIGHT pane, RENAME the entries for UpperFilters and LowerFilters. There may be only one of these. If so, rename it. Use your initials as a prefix, followed by an underscore character. Something like JDC_LowerFilters works just fine. DO NOT delete this value, because you will need to go back into the registry later and rename this entry back to it's original name (removing the JDC_ part).

Exit the registry editor.

Reboot/Restart.

For me, at this point, RecordNow no longer recognizes the drive. Sonic MYDVD does not recognize the drive. Arcsoft Showbiz does not recognize the drive. Reinstalling it may fix (I'll be tryng this later). Nero StartSmart does work, and will write to SONY dual layer DVDs. Not recommended are Memorex, Maxell, and any generic brands or store named brands e.g. Officemax or Staples at 16x1-16x. I've heard rumors that Imation, Verbatim, Ridata, Ritek, Sony, and Philips may all work. I tried TDK, and it did NOT work.

Also, whatever software you may be using to edit video and create DVDs may not recognize the drive at this point. So the recommendation is...

1. Perform the above steps to rename the registry key.

2. Reboot/Restart.

3. Using Nero, write the video files to the Sony DVD+R DL disk in your drive. On my computer, this took about 50 minutes to write 7.8 GB.

4. After creating all your Sony DVD+R DL DVDs, shut down Nero.

5. Edit the same registry key, renaming UpperFilters and LowrFilters to their original names (removing your initials and the underscore character).

6. Exit the registry editor.

7. Reboot/Restart.

... and now you should be back to where you were before you started, with everything being functional - except possibly for writing to dual layer DVDs again! After re-editing the registry key entry to the original name, Nero StartSmart continued to write to SONY DL DVDs successfully. I was surprised about this, but not upset! :-)

You can of course try different software to write the data to the Sony DL DVDs. If you find something that works, PLEASE post it here so we can all benefit from your experiences. Same with alternative DVD DL media.

Thanks! And good luck to you...

Since my last post here, I have learned:

In addition to the SONY DVD+R DL discs, Verbatim DVD+R DL discs also work just fine. The Verbatim are easier to find, and are generally cheaper than the Sonys. Found what seems like a good deal here, but feel free to look around: http://www.supermediastore.com/verbatim-96...r-dl-media.html

Also, there's a big difference in time spent writing a disc using 2x, 4x, 6x, 8x, or higher.

My WinXP machine was using PIO. Following hints I'd read, I opened the Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and clicked once on Secondary IDE Channel. Then right-clicked Secondary IDE Channel, then navigated to Properties/Advanced Settings. If one of the 2 Devices listed is set to PIO mode, do this:

Click Cancel.
Right-click Secondary IDE Channel.
Click Uninstall
Click OK.

Now shutdown/restart the computer. It should automatically find the "New Hardware" and set the IO mode to the highest available.

Check to see if things have changed. Navigate to Control Panel/System/Hardware/Device Manager IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers and click once on Secondary IDE Channel. Then right-click Secondary IDE Channel, then navigate to Properties/Advanced Settings. If the Device listed is now set to Ultra DMA Mode 4, you've just reduced your DVD DL write time from 50+ minutes to somewhere between 14-16 minutes. Depends on how much data you're writing to that Dual Layer DVD, of course.
