why am i losing hd space after running a disk defrag?

What defragmenter are you using?
The only thing i can think is that you have critical hdd and I would backup and replace.
Normally a OS checks your HDD to see if it has any bad sectors and then finds them and makes a note not to write to those sectors.You see, all HDD degrad over time and this is how the OS makes sure it doesnt write in these sectors, even a new HDD has bad sectors. But the fact that you lost 15Gb sounds very bad to me.

Do you have a disk utility to check the condition of your HDD?
If not try this trial of Burnin Test and check out the HDD passmark burnin test

i have found the cause
the automatic system restore creator in vista created 40 gb of system restore data
i just deleted all of it except the first one created
i have already backed up all my data
i went from 25 gb to 65 gb
