BleepingComputer.com: Virus sends me to random websites

When I use Yahoo or Google, etc... when I click a link it just sends me to a random website. Also, I cannot access any antivirus site such as this site or McAfee. I had to use my wife's computer to send this... I ran my McAfee scan, MalwareBytes. SuperAntiSpyware and a few others and nothing works, they all say I am clean. Please help.

My name is Sam and I will be helping you.

I will do my best to communicate clearly to you so that we can resolve your issues as quickly as possible. In order to see what's going on with your computer I will ask for you to post various logs from the tools that we will use to fix your computer. Please communicate freely with me about how your computer is reacting and behaving as we work through this process.

You'll need a way to download the files we need and transfer them over to the infected computer until we clear enough of the infection to allow you better access to the right tools.


Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :

• Restart your computer
  
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
  
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
  
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
  
• Choose your usual account.

• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
  
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
  
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
  
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
  
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
  
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
  (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
  
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back here in your next reply.

Thank you very much for taking the time to help me. I loaded SDfix previously, so I ran it twice yesterday but with no success... I still have the problem. Here is the report from the when I ran it yesterday.

I tried to run ComboFix a few times today, but it kept locking up. One time I let it go for over 2 hours just to be sure. Then it kept telling me that I needed to close another program and reboot, but nothing else was running... all security programs were off as well.

But it seems to have helped. I can now get on sites like bleepingcomputer and Mcafee. And it is not taking me to random sites anymore.

So I ran McAfee virus scan, MalwareBytes and SuperAntSpyware just to be safe.

Should I do anything else? Should I send you a log from HiJack this or another program (again, ComboFix will not finish and give me a log)

I don't have any ComboFix logs. I probably deleted them when I tried to Uninstall and Reinstall it. Now ComboFix just gets hung up and won't run at all. I think it is my McAfee that stops it. When I do a McAfee scan, it identifies any ComboFix files as threats.

Other programs like MalwareBytes, HyjackThis and SuperAntiSpywrae work fine.

It has been a few days and all seems fine now, but let me know if any other logs would help.

Oh yes, Mcafee will cause problems with it if you don't disable it first.
But if you're not having the issue any longer, then we don't need to keep poking around.

Let's just clean up the tools I had you download and then I'll post some final recommendations.

Please download the OTMoveIt3 by OldTimer.

• Save it to your desktop.
  
• Make sure you have an Internet Connection.
  
• Double-click OTMoveIt3.exe to run it.
  
• Click on the CleanUp! button
  
• A list of tool components used in the Cleanup of malware will be downloaded.
  
• If your Firewall or Real Time protection attempts to block OtMoveit2 to reach the Internet, please allow the application to do so.
  
• Click Yes to begin the Cleanup process and remove these components, including this application.
  
• You will be asked to reboot the machine to finish the Cleanup process. If you are asked to reboot the machine choose Yes.

Now that you are clean, please follow these simple steps in order to keep your computer clean and secure:

• Disable and Enable System Restore. - If you are using Windows ME or XP then you should disable and reenable system restore to make sure there are no infected files found in a restore point left over from what we have just cleaned.

• Make your Internet Explorer more secure - This can be done by following these simple instructions:
  • From within Internet Explorer click on the Tools menu and then click on Options.
    
  • Click once on the Security tab
    
  • Click once on the Internet icon so it becomes highlighted.
    
  • Click once on the Custom Level button.
    
    • Change the Download signed ActiveX controls to Prompt
      
      
    • Change the Download unsigned ActiveX controls to Disable
      
      
    • Change the Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe to Disable
      
      
    • Change the Installation of desktop items to Prompt
      
      
    • Change the Launching programs and files in an IFRAME to Prompt
      
      
    • Change the Navigate sub-frames across different domains to Prompt
      
      
    • When all these settings have been made, click on the OK button.
      
      
    • If it prompts you as to whether or not you want to save the settings, press the Yes button.
    
    
  • Next press the Apply button and then the OK to exit the Internet Properties page.
  
  
  
• Use an AntiVirus Software - It is very important that your computer has an anti-virus software running on your machine. This alone can save you a lot of trouble with malware in the future.

• Update your AntiVirus Software - It is imperitive that you update your Antivirus software at least once a week (Even more if you wish). If you do not update your antivirus software then it will not be able to catch any of the new variants that may come out.
  
  
  
• Use a Firewall - I can not stress how important it is that you use a Firewall on your computer. Without a firewall your computer is succeptible to being hacked and taken over. I am very serious about this and see it happen almost every day with my clients. Simply using a Firewall in its default configuration can lower your risk greatly.

• Visit Microsoft's Windows Update Site Frequently - It is important that you visit http://www.windowsupdate.com regularly. This will ensure your computer has always the latest security updates available installed on your computer. If there are new updates to install, install them immediately, reboot your computer, and revisit the site until there are no more critical updates.
  
  
  
• Install Spybot - Search and Destroy - Install and download Spybot - Search and Destroy with its TeaTimer option. This will provide realtime spyware & hijacker protection on your computer alongside your virus protection. You should also scan your computer with program on a regular basis just as you would an antivirus software.

• Update all these programs regularly - Make sure you update all the programs I have listed regularly. Without regular updates you WILL NOT be protected when new malicious programs are released.

Follow this list and your potential for being infected again will reduce dramatically.
