I should probably make a clarification here. Moderators do not remove threads, well, hardly ever. Most of the time they set the post invisible and point it out to the administrators. Usually when a thread disappears, it is because it has gone hopelessly off track. Personally, I do not have the time to go through and clean up threads, although I occasionally will. The thing is, no matter how I edit the posts, I make someone mad, or someone screams censorship, or someone else gets an overblown sense of self importance. Threads disappear from General Chat because that belong in the Speak Easy. If it is a newer member, I move it. If it is an older member that knows better, I sometimes see it as a blatant attempt to bypass the post moderation of the Speak Easy. Then there are times that the other members treat those posts as though they were in the Speak Easy, even though they know better.
In the Speak Easy, when threads degenerate into racial bigotry, or they become full of thoughtless comments that propel stereotypes, it becomes apparent that the members are unable to discuss that particular topic. It is not a reflection on anybody other than the current pool of people have strong emotional feelings about a topic that prohibits a good discussion. Even if the bad posts are removed, the thread will still degenerate, so it is just easier to (in most cases) simply lock it, or in other cases, remove it all together.
The best policy is if there is a question about a missing thread, ask a staff member. And if you think I happen to be talking about you, don't, because I am not thinking of any one person in particular. If these points hit close to home, then I would ask you to consider them the next time you are posting, and help keep each other on track.

Seems a shame when one makes an interesting Topic and some clowns causes it to be Closed.
Agreed. However I think you will find that those 'clowns' wear out their welcome awfully fast.
EDIT: I forgot to apologize to those members whose hard work some times gets nailed in the crossfire. We do try very hard to not have that happen.
