Threads are closed, for many reasons.Threads can go on indefinately,as new Members join.
Often an interesting Thread is closed, due to the foolish, or insiteful postings, of one individual.
By this action, I feel all members are penalized, instead of the guilty perpertrator.
I respect Admins actions,in closing a Thread, and wondered is there a fairer alternative.
Could I suggest, suspending the fools posting ability, for a short period.
This is possible, and thought it may be worth a trial run.
Interested to hear opinions.

I don't know if you're referring to a specific thread or just threads in general, DSTM, but I just discovered the thread called "Wishing and Wishing" has either been removed or there's a malfunction on the link as I get the following if clicking on it:

"Error: Sorry, the link that brought you to this page seems to be out of date or broke"

For myself, if a post is made that 'crosses the line' in anyway, could just the offending post be removed by a Moderator - rather than the entire thread, please?

MaraM, usually that is what a Moderator will try to do, unfortunately they can't always catch it in time and would wind up having to delete several posts in order to make it right. There are times where the posts become heated and it is the best policy just to shut is down before someone says something that will require a more permanent solution.

DSTM, I personally believe that suspending privileges on minor matters is draconian, a simple PM by a moderator usually will suffice. There is already a great deal of work for the moderators without having to monitor a suspension. Most of the members here are intelligent and will recognize that they are out of line and will comply with the suggestions of the staff.

Yes, I honestly do understand the work involved but when members read a number of posts in a thread and, for instance, one member oversteps followed by even another member retaliating, surely just the two pertinent posts could be removed - with perhaps a little notation made by a Moderator saying simply two posts have been removed because they crossed the line?

Truly not trying to make more work for Moderators ... but it's also a bit wearisome to bother starting threads and then have one's posts - plus all the 'within limits' posts - suddenly go poof! Rather than only the 'guilty' party being punished by having his or her offensive posts removed, it honestly does feel as if the innocent members are suffering too. Gentle smile.

In answer to your Post,DC3.
A one off breach, of Forum rules, doesn't need suspension. There is nothing Draconian, about my suggestion.
Moderators do not have to monitor, a suspension. A few clicks and it's done.At the end of the time the member pm's Admin and it's reversed.Nothing hard about that.
I have seen, where a mod will post a notice in a thread, and that normally suffices, and then you get the member, who has been sent PM's, from Mods ,and continues to abuse the privilage, and doesn't play ball.
That's when a suspension is in order.IMO.

I haven't all the answers, just airing our thoughts,on this issue.
Seems a shame when one makes an interesting Topic and some clowns causes it to be Closed.

I should probably make a clarification here. Moderators do not remove threads, well, hardly ever. Most of the time they set the post invisible and point it out to the administrators. Usually when a thread disappears, it is because it has gone hopelessly off track. Personally, I do not have the time to go through and clean up threads, although I occasionally will. The thing is, no matter how I edit the posts, I make someone mad, or someone screams censorship, or someone else gets an overblown sense of self importance. Threads disappear from General Chat because that belong in the Speak Easy. If it is a newer member, I move it. If it is an older member that knows better, I sometimes see it as a blatant attempt to bypass the post moderation of the Speak Easy. Then there are times that the other members treat those posts as though they were in the Speak Easy, even though they know better.

In the Speak Easy, when threads degenerate into racial bigotry, or they become full of thoughtless comments that propel stereotypes, it becomes apparent that the members are unable to discuss that particular topic. It is not a reflection on anybody other than the current pool of people have strong emotional feelings about a topic that prohibits a good discussion. Even if the bad posts are removed, the thread will still degenerate, so it is just easier to (in most cases) simply lock it, or in other cases, remove it all together.

The best policy is if there is a question about a missing thread, ask a staff member. And if you think I happen to be talking about you, don't, because I am not thinking of any one person in particular. If these points hit close to home, then I would ask you to consider them the next time you are posting, and help keep each other on track.

Agreed. However I think you will find that those 'clowns' wear out their welcome awfully fast.

EDIT: I forgot to apologize to those members whose hard work some times gets nailed in the crossfire. We do try very hard to not have that happen.
