CAN'T GET INTO WINDOWS ME

I'm writing this post for a friend of mine who has Windows ME and can't get past the splash screen. she has an old Gateway running windows ME. she says her grandaughter was fooling around with the computer and since then she hasn't been able to log in. her son also uses the pc.

I was able to get into safe mode. I tried to go to a restore point but the computer says i have to restart the pc first. when i restarted it(in safe mode) i STILL got the same message. from there i went into msconfig-general and deselected each process(system.ini, win.ini, static vxd, and startup group items) ONE AT A TIME and tried to reboot. each reboot didn't work, so i restored everything and stopped there because i didn't want to do anything that was irreversable. so i decided to ask you guys for some help. my friend says she has all the discs from gateway.

What message? What does it say?

go to ms config and then go to advanced and then click all top 3
and scan reg
is that computer connected to the interent?

i know it's been a while. i now have my friend's computer in my place. she will be getting a new one, but i told her i would try to retrieve her documents if i can. really, i would like to get the pc going again if possible.(learning experience)

- by the top 3, do you mean:

Disable System ROM Breakpoint
Disable Virtual HD IRQ
EMM Exclude A000-FFFF

- i don't see scan reg. where would that be?
- no, it's not connected to the internet.

no go to start , run and then type scanreg
see if it has any errors
and mabye restoring the computer back from a registry may help
so do start , run and then type scanreg /restore

i attempted to do scanreg but i got an error message:

"if you run an MS-DOS program in safe mode, you risk corrupting the video display or experiencing other anomalies. do you want to run the program anyway?"

is it okay to run it?

umm not sure
ok to be sure
get a windows me or 98 start up disk
some where from bootdisk.com
and then put it on a floppy disk and then let it run(restart the computer) and it should say some thing like PRESS F5 FOR DOS PROMPT
do that and then type scanreg
and if it has errors repair it
and if it dont say nothing then go and type scanreg /restore and select which one that worked before the problom came
