BleepingComputer.com: Can Outlook 2007 be serving spam?

I am using Outlook 2007 with Vista 64 and AVG Internet Security, all with the latest updates.
My email server is Google Gmail. I have a google apps account.

I am finding dozens of bounced email in my inbox.
I am finding dozens of sent messages in the webmail, online inbox but none the Outlook sent box.

The spam blast happens every few days when I click the send receive button. Within minutes of clicking I begin to receive the bounced messages. I feel certain the virus resides within Outlook but cannot find any info about it. Only one other post in this forum has complained about the same issues. I am also suspecting a pattern of using Outlook, IMAP and Gmail and Google Desktop.
