I have a Seagate 750GB that I dropped about a foot on to a rug. The drive does not seem to be spinning up, so I am not sure if the spindle motor is broken or if it is just stuck, etc. I have read you can place it in the freezer for a few hours / overnight. I actually was told by Seagate Tech Support to do this, so my drive is currently sitting in the freezer.
I also opened up the case with the assistance of Seagate to see if the platter would move by touching the edges, all risky, but this is how we determined the spindle was the issue, since the platters wouldn't move and I immediatley closed it back up.
I have ordered an exact drive in hope that I could remove my platters out of the bad drive and put into the new drive. Has anyone attempted this before? Any suggestions?
I did call a couple of data recovery folks and they gave me no less then quotes of between $1800 - $4500.
THANKS!

The freezer technique is good for grabbing data at the last minute.
But however, you said you opened the hard drive? If you mean where you could physically touch the internal components then I'd the drive is gone, I don't know if you'd even be able to get data off of that.
As it is, Hard drives are assembled inside of a controlled environment. Anyways... A single speck of dust could mean catastrophe.
So... good luck, I hope the freeze technique works for you.

If I am helping you and I do not respond within 24 hours, please send me a PM. :)
