I downloaded the "Alky Project", which is supposedly a file library which allows people to run their games in DirectX 10. Well, after not seeing any results after the install, I was unable to play several DX9 games. Battlefield 2 shows an error at startup that says "Needs DirectX 9.0c or higher. 10 found". This is really annoying. There is no uninstaller for alky, only an installer which puts all of the DX10 dll's into my WINDOWS folder. After deleting these dll's, I still have same problem. Can you tell me what's wrong? I've tried to rewind using System Restore, but when I try it says restore failed, try a different date (for EVERY date!).

Thanks very much for that link, it could be very useful for me. But alky was apparently not installed by MSI, it's not on the list.

Try downloading DirectX 9.0c

See if that helps

:crying: it seems that it only checks to make sure that DX9.0c is installed  apparently it is. But BF2 seems to dislike me. Maybe a reinstall. In progress.

A reinstall
you mean your operating system
that would fix your directx problem
Once direct x 9 is messed up
either a repair or reinstall is in order
unless someone knows how to fix it

GOOD LUCK...........

FULLY RESOLVED: there was some tiny little way-off-in-the-corner-of-a-russian-download-site piece of software that allows me to switch between DX9 and DX10. Suppose I'll have to tolerate DX10 existing.)))))))))))))))))))))))))))))) :flowers::):trumpet:

Please post a link, or at least the name of the software.
