These are most often either errors in the OS (and an update will fix it), or errors in the coding of a program - and that will take the programmer to fix it.

As for the updates, the most common one mentioned seems to be the C++ updates. I'd add the .NET framework versions 1, 2, and 3 just to be safe. If you get a mention of the SQL update I'd install that also.

Beyond that, I'd run SFC.EXE /SCANNOW from the Start dialog.
