This is similar to one of the problems I have been experiencing on my laptop and it can sometimes take ages before the IP address is found. You probably have a dynamic IP address (as I do) not a static one, which may be part of the problem.
I am running XP Home and I have tried changing the program controlling my wireless connection from Belkin (my router) to XP zero configuration. This appears to have worked for me today but I am unsure if this will solve matters.
Try accessing your router via computer and look for the two choices - if the router is controlling your connection change it to the alternative offered and try again.
I am not sold on wireless so far as I find IE drops off more frequently than it did while I was using broadband - Ethernet seems much more reliable and very much faster also.
Good luck

thanks. I am running XP server pack 2. My connection isn't wireless.
When I type ipconfig /renew I receive the following message:
An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to contact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
I have run network diagnostics, and these things failed
-DefaultIPGateway = 192.XXX.X.X (Same Subnet)

Sorry cannot help with the techie information. Maybe some techie on the forum one will notice and step in to help.
I would suggest you contact your ISP or better still, your router manufacturer. I had to contact Belkin when setting up my home wireless and wired network (which had to be set up using the wired Ethernet cable.) It did help but took ages to get right - and I am still having problems with IE dropping off. In my case the technichal help was in India and that was not ideal for clarity, but at least I did get it running in the end.
I too am running XP home wth service pack 3 installed and all updates.
Hope you get some good advice.
