Ubuntu can be downloaded via a few options (I would recommend BitTorrent) from here: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors
The current version of Ubuntu is actually 8.04, 8.10 is still in beta and will be released in a few days on October 30th.
Some guides to get you started: https://help.ubuntu.com/ , http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/index.php for support there is here of course and the Ubuntu forums.
Also I can't go with out pointing out that letting any one you don't already know and trust to have remote access to your computer is never a good idea.

Mark
why won't my laptop work?
Having grandkids is God's way of giving you a 2nd chance because you were too busy working your butt off the 1st time around
Do not send me PMs with problems that should be posted in the forums. Keep it in the forums, so everyone benefits

Ubuntu is accepting requests for a free 8.10 CD now.
This CD can be used as a "live CD" or used to install Ubuntu 8.10.
Since 8.10 has not been released, you can expect a 5 week delivery time stateside. My guess.

You may want to try Ubuntu for 2 weeks or so before installing it. The live CD will allow you to do that.
