You just need the reader, not all of the bloatware. A lot of people have found Foxit pdf reader to be a preferred substitute. Just letting you know

So is it safe to remove it without damaging Adobe Reader 9's features (like update or uninstall)?

It's fine to uninstall Acrobat.com and Adobe Air, they are just extras. If you only want to be able to view PDF's and still have it update, it is safe to uninstall these extras
