im not sure why but suddenly they just stopped. i dont get it! i download cds all the time. my itunes has 1500 songs for the love of god.
they can still open and close, and they still try to read the disc for a few seconds, but then stop and nothing comes up on the computer.
either drive does not show up in 'my computer', only my documents and c hard drive is there.. there is no 'cd-rom/dvd rom' entry in the device manager.
i opened up my computer and unplugged the wires from both of them, and checked it out, then plugged the wires back in. it seemed fine.
i went to set-up utility (f2 at start up) and found this:
primary hard drive 0 - hard drive
primary hard drive 1 - off
secondary drive 0- off
secondary drive 1 - off
does that have anything to do with it???
thank you in advance to anyone who reads this and helps me.

If you use Sonic or Roxio, get rid of it and try something else
why won't my laptop work?

Do they now appear in My Computer? Disk management?
If so, have you tried burning/reading anything since the changes took place?

But your first post indicates that neither drive is reflected in the BIOS.
I'd say that they are connected improperly or are dead...but you say they still show signs of receiving power.
I don't know...
I suppose that I would move the drives to another system for testing...if they work on a different system, it's something with your system.
Or, alternatively, try a different drive with your system.

samsung sw-240
lite-on i.t. corp LTN-496S
i tried installing them manually from 'add hardware'. neither of these drives were on the list.
im pretty pissed. could my IRQ's be messed up?
edit: i also just found and used 'CD Gone'. also should i try turning any secondary drives on in set-up utility? no one yet has commented on that.

BIOS is a acronym for basic input/output system, the built-in software that determines what a computer can do without accessing programs from a disk. On PCs, the BIOS contains all the code required to control the keyboard, display screen, disk drives, serial communications, and a number of miscellaneous functions.
http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/B/BIOS.html
This BIOS is stored in a IC on the motherboard and is powered by a lithium battery so that its setting will remain after the power is turned of of the computer. Without the BIOS, you computer is only a door stop.

Are you using the button on the front to open the tray or are you using the mouse to open it? If you are using the button on the front the drive could be failing.

i cant use the mouse to open it.....neither of the 2 drives are on the computer at all.
and like i said, sometimes when i turn the computer on the light stays on and when i press the button it wont open.
but sometimes i start up the computer and the light is off and i can open it up, and i can put in a cd and it will attempt to read it, but the computer doesnt recongnize it at all.
im not sure why the light is on and off at different times.
